Queer kinship and family making revisited

Call for papers

Deadline for abstracts: June 15, 2018

The past decade has witnessed an explosion of research in critical and queer kinship studies, much of which has centred on how LGBTQ families and families of choice cope with heteronormative institutions and structures. The Nordic region has long been characterized as particularly progressive when it comes to gender equality, sexual rights, and even anti-racism. After over a decade of expanding marriage and family rights for LGBTQ people, what constitutes queer kinship in the Nordic region? How does LGBTQ reproduction confirm or challenge Nordic exceptionalism or growing trends of homonationalism? What kinds of new challenges, questions, topics emerge as formal rights are increasingly established? What kinds of familial homonormativities are emerging and who remains on the margins? How is queer kinship represented in popular culture and the arts? This special issue invites articles on new forms of familymaking and kinship in an age of medically assisted reproduction and expanding family law. While we welcome submissions from all over the world, we are especially interested in papers that grapple with empirical and theoretical materials related to the Nordic region.

* Trans*parenting
